Our Alpaca adventure started in 2007 with half a dozen alpacas as a test to see if our property was suited to alpacas, and also to see if we could manage them.
Around 80% of our current herd was born on our property and the average age of our herd is 5 years old.
Around 39% of our herd is white, 14% fawn, 16% black, 11% brown, 20% grey
From 2007 to 2012 Jacinta travelled to various alpaca studs both locally and interstate to view and purchase animals from a range of bloodlines.
We started with animals from Ambersun, Bonnie Park, Canchones, Chaparral, Classic, Compass, Coonawarra, Cricklewood, Danaroo, Flowerdale, Flying Colours, Grand Flowerdale, Greenvale, Grovenor Heights, Jandarra, Jolimont, Kiaka, Malakai, Nangkita, Patagonia, Serendip, Shingleback, Softfoot, Timber Top, Whisperingheight, Wyterrica and Yaringa.
At our peak we had over 210 alpacas. Late 2020 we are at ~120. Our aim is to run around 100 or fewer, so we still have a number of alpacas available for sale at very competitive prices. Please see the For Sale section for the latest availability and pricing.
For a while we attended the shows but have stepped back in recent years to concentrate on other priorities. We still enter some of the fleece shows. Our results are listed here: Show Results.
The name "Riverport" refers to the river port of Goolwa to which we are connected via the Hindmarsh Island bridge. Hindmarsh Island sits in the Lower Lakes system of the Murray River. Our climate is temperate but dry. Annual rainfall is 420mm. The proximity of the ocean keeps us cooler (24c) during the baking hot South Australian summers, though we can hit 47c (116f) on a bad day.
